Start with the original fan specification
Identify the original manufacturer and complete model first. Search manufacturer datasheets, equipment parts lists, service documentation, and approved substitution records before deriving requirements from appearance.
- Record the complete original model and suffix.
- Determine why the original cannot be supplied.
- Obtain the original datasheet or equipment specification.
- Separate mandatory requirements from preferences.
- Document every difference in the proposed replacement.
See how to find the fan model number and confirm whether a supplier reference is exact using the fan model matching guide.
Cooling affects equipment safety and service life. Mains-powered, safety-critical, medical, railway, hazardous-location, or high-value equipment should be assessed by qualified personnel using approved documentation.
Send the original model and let us help shortlist replacements
If you do not already have a candidate, send us the complete original model or a clear label photo. We can help search for the original fan and shortlist same-brand or cross-brand alternatives by comparing the available technical information.
- Send the original model, label photo, quantity, and any available equipment or connector photos.
- We compare the original fan with available candidate models.
- For a planned bulk purchase, order one or two candidate units first.
- Test fit, wiring, control functions, airflow, noise, and equipment temperature in the actual equipment.
- Place the remaining order only after the trial is accepted.
The sections below explain the main criteria used to compare candidates. Because we cannot inspect or commission every type of equipment, a shortlisted model is a candidate for validation, not a guarantee of equipment compatibility.
If one or two trial units that we recommended prove incompatible during validation, they are eligible for a free return under our return conditions. Keep the product and packaging complete; do not cut or alter wires, dismantle the fan, or cause damage. If your total requirement is only one or two units, the same protection applies.
If you choose to skip the one- or two-unit trial and order a larger quantity immediately, equipment-compatibility risk remains with the purchaser. Compatibility-related bulk returns are not covered by the free trial return protection. This condition should be confirmed before the bulk order is placed.
1. Verify electrical requirements
| Field | What to verify | Risk if wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Fan type | AC or DC, supply waveform and frequency where applicable | Failure to start or immediate damage |
| Rated voltage | Match the specified supply voltage and permitted range | Underspeed, overheating, or damage |
| Current/power | Running and startup demand within equipment limits | Overloaded supply, wiring, or protection |
| Polarity/grounding | DC polarity, protective earth, insulation, and wiring diagram | Damage or electrical hazard |
A higher voltage or current rating is not automatically safer. Verify the complete power and protection design.
2. Verify mechanical fit
- Frame length and width
- Overall thickness or depth
- Mounting-hole spacing
- Hole diameter and fasteners
- Guard, duct, and bracket clearance
- Cable exit direction and length
- Airflow and rotation direction
- Impeller clearance
Measure the installed space as well as the removed fan. A nominal size such as 120 mm does not define thickness, hole geometry, connector clearance, or custom brackets.
3. Verify connector, pinout, and control functions
| Typical wiring | Possible functions | Checks required |
|---|---|---|
| 2 wires | Power and return | Voltage, polarity, connector, and pinout |
| 3 wires | Power plus speed feedback or alarm | Signal type, pulses, voltage level, and pin position |
| 4 or more wires | PWM, speed command, alarm, enable, or communication | Manufacturer pinout and control specification |
Do not transfer pin positions based only on color. Compare connector keying, pin numbering, voltage levels, signal type, and manufacturer documentation.
4. Verify cooling performance
Compare the operating requirements, not one headline value. Airflow is usually stated at low resistance, while installed equipment creates pressure loss.
- Airflow: volume delivered under stated test conditions.
- Static pressure: ability to move air through filters, heat sinks, ducts, and restricted spaces.
- Speed: affects airflow, pressure, noise, vibration, and power.
- Fan curve: shows the relationship between airflow and pressure.
- Acoustics: verify noise limits and tonal requirements.
Where cooling performance is critical, compare fan curves and validate temperatures in the actual equipment rather than relying on nominal airflow alone.
5. Verify construction and operating environment
Bearing and service life
Check bearing type, orientation, expected life, duty cycle, and maintenance requirements.
Temperature and humidity
Confirm the specified operating and storage ranges, including startup at temperature extremes.
Contamination and ingress
Dust, oil mist, moisture, salt, and chemicals may require sealing, coating, or a suitable IP rating.
Compliance and application
Confirm required safety approvals, flammability, EMC provisions, and application-specific certification.
Replacement decision checklist
If any mandatory field is unknown, classify the replacement as unconfirmed and obtain more evidence before installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a fan with a higher current rating?
Not automatically. The equipment power supply, startup current, protection, connector, wiring, heat load, and control circuit must support it. Use equipment or manufacturer documentation to confirm.
Can a faster fan replace a slower fan?
Not automatically. Higher speed may increase airflow, noise, power demand, vibration, and control-system errors. Static-pressure requirements and equipment limits must also be considered.
Can I replace a 3-wire fan with a 2-wire fan?
Usually not without confirming the equipment design. The third wire may provide speed feedback or an alarm signal required for monitoring, startup, or fault protection.
Is matching airflow enough?
No. The operating point depends on system resistance and static pressure. Electrical input, size, connector, control signals, environment, and mounting must also be compatible.
Can you guarantee that a recommended replacement will work in my equipment?
No. We can shortlist candidates from the original model, labels, datasheets, and photos, but we cannot inspect or test every equipment configuration. For a planned bulk purchase, test one or two units in the actual equipment before ordering the remaining quantity. If one or two trial units we recommended prove incompatible, they are eligible for a free return under our return conditions; this protection does not apply to compatibility-related bulk returns when the trial is skipped.
